The Charge of the Light Brigade Essay example -- English Literature
The Charge of the Light groupWar poetry is a theme that has inspired many poets. Compare andcontrast metrical compositions by 2 poets from different eras and cultures. Say whichone you elect and why.The two poems and the poets that I am going to look at are The Chargeof the Light Brigade written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Dulce ETDecorum Est. Pro Patria Mori by Wilfred Owen. The kickoff poem was written during the reign of Queen Victoria inEngland. During this metre the Victorians as the people were called hada very religious outlook on life. The draw was written by the poetbecause it was such a bad conflict that the governwork forcet couldnt let thepeople see that it had made a great mistake and so it commissionedTennyson to keep the poem grammatical construction what a wonderful battle it had been.It was a cover up.The second poem was written by Wilfred Owen while he was on active receipts during the First World War. He was a young man and was againstthe unnameable waste of life the First World War caused. He believedthis was overdue to bad leadership by the generals. Wilfred Owen was ableto experience the contend as it really was whereas Tennyson never actuallysaw the battle he was writing about. Owenss poem was written becausehe was in the fight and wants to key you what it was like in the warI am going to write about The Charge of The Light Brigade which isabout the Crimean War which was fought amongst Russia on the one handand Britain France and Turkey on the other. The charge of the sparklebrigade occurred in November 1854 at Balaclava in the Crimea. Thebrave sextuplet hundred rode straight down a valley that was fortified atits end by many cannon served by Russian and Cossack gunners. Theheroes were by-line confus... ...nces between the two poems are that in one the poet issaying that the war could not have gone any better, and the poem istelling you that the war was the worst one ever. Also The Charge ofthe Light Brigade has a gallo ping verse all most all the waythrough the poem. In the Dulce ET Decorum EST Pro Patria Mori poemthere is no obvious rhythm to this poem and in fact the slow pace ofthe poem makes us think of the soldiers trudging through the muddytrenches. One was involved in armed combat but Tennyson was simply writing about anevent hed read about and was against the cruelty and waste of lifewar brought whereas Tennyson wanted people to feel that war washonourable worthwhile and necessary. I prefer Dulce et Decorum est. asit is more realistic and makes me feel sorry for the men in the poem.Tennyson poem does not give a true account of the war.
