1776 Reading Review
Katie Cohen Ms. Kenny AP US History, Period 5 15 August 2012 Summer Reading Assignment David McCulloughââ¬â¢s 1776 is an insightful and honest account of Americaââ¬â¢s first war; the Revolutionary war. In the book, David McCullough describes events and skirmishes that led up to the independence of the United States of America and the events that followed it. The book primarily focuses on the military aspects of the revolutionary war. The variety of firsthand account, quotes, and perspectives of both the Americans and the British make 1776 an extremely well crafted story made up of firsthand facts. To some 1776 may not be enjoyable or engaging, however, it is very precise and descriptive. David McCullough does an exceptional job of explaining the Independence of America in a way that does not bore the audience like most historical biographies do. Although it is clear from the beginning that David McCullough intentionally portrays America as the hero of the book, he allows the rea der to identify with the British and even the king of Britain at the time as well. Honest and unbiased accounts are given towards both the Americans as well as the British. Many candid and liberal accounts of the British and the Americans as put forward throughout the book. With much detail, David McCullough illustrates King Georgeââ¬â¢s reaction to the rebellious American colonists as they begin to organize for freedom in the first chapter. He does not shed light on George Washington as a superior and more competent general than Howe. Both American and British forces are described in times of brilliance, luck, disappointment and shame. Not only is David McCullough unbiased, but he gives many in depth descriptions of his characters. The reader is able to become familiar with the characteristics, physical appearances, and biases of a majority of the characters. Joseph Reed is described as ââ¬Å"a young man with a long jaw and a somewhat quizzical look in his eyes (44),â⬠and J ames Grant, ââ¬Å"a grossly fat, highly opinionated scot (71). â⬠The descriptions of characters range from the British generals, to the American traitors. They make the book understandable and complex. Overall, 1776 is an enjoyable read, however, it could have focused more on he Declaration of Independence and the effects the war had on Great Britain. McCullough delivers the history as a story, while maintaining the attention of his audience. The usage of imagery is tremendous with few exceptions; all of the events were illustrated vividly. Quotes of the people who participated in the war are probably the most intriguing aspects of this book. I, personally, would recommend this book because it is intriguing and an easy way to learn essential information about the country in which we live in effectively.

The Road by Cormac Mccarthy
The Road by Corm McCarthy is a novel set in a post-apocalyptic world following the path of a Father and Son. McCarthy is a highly celebrated award-winning author. He is 78 years old and has an 8-year-old son ââ¬â an uncommon circumstance ââ¬â underlining that for him, death is imminent and prompting him to consider the ideas discussed in his novel. In The Road, the father is undergoing a crisis of faith and so adopts an Existentialist view and creates meaning through his son ââ¬â who therefore influences many of his actions.I found McCarthy use of techniques such as Juxtaposition and antithesis that counter the macabre images throughout the book with those of love between the father and Son both repulsive and fascinating at the same time. The earth is in a state of despair ââ¬â there is no electricity, transport or access to food/ water. Much of humanity has turned feral, losing all sense of the moral code that makes us human. McCarthy uses the Mother and Father to sh ow conflicting choices made in this environment. The Fathers choice was to live because of the belief he has in his child, which he formed in his despair. If he is not the word of God than God never spoke. Because of the nightmarish situation the world has been placed in, he finds it hard to hold onto his religious beliefs concerning God and so instead looks to find another meaning in life to give him reason to continue ââ¬â his son. If the son is not worth keeping alive then everything that he once believed in must be false. On the other hand, the mother takes a nihilistic view. ââ¬Å"Why don't we talk about death anymore? Because it is here. There is nothing left to talk about. â⬠She chooses to kill herself, as she believes that there is no point prolonging the inevitable. They will ape us, kill us and eat us. â⬠This represents a grotesque corruption of parenthood. For the mother to take such drastic measures we realize the true gravity and hopelessness of the sit uation. However, even though the mother can see this clearly, the Father, who cannot give up hope while his son lives, cannot bear to let this hope die even though it may be in the child's best intentions. We can clearly see the effect the son has on his father because he has chosen to follow his belief system and fight to keep his son and therefore hope alive. The mother and father are both in the same tuition but choose to follow different paths. However, as McCarthy further explores in the novel, both of these choices will ultimately end in death. Through the son's actions, McCarthy suggests a different path to choose in this environment, while continuing to demonstrate the sons influence over the father. When they come across a shuffling, limping man who looks close to death the father insists that nothing can be done. ââ¬Å"Can't we help him Papa? â⬠The son shows a compassion and humanity that the father, in his quest for survival, lacks this.He chooses to treat everythin g, hostile or otherwise as a threat. This is an understandable mentality but as the son demonstrates to us certainly not the only one. Later in the novel, the pair come across a little boy and a dog on the road. ââ¬Å"We should go get him, Papa. We could get him and take him with us. We could take him and we could take the dog. The dog could catch something to eatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦. What about the little boy? He sobbed. What about the little boy? â⬠In this case, the boys kindness seems to go beyond Just compassion. He seems to see himself in the little boy (if not purely for any reason ether insists that they cannot trust a little boy Just like him might make him consider if they really are the ââ¬Ëgood guys' and ââ¬Ëcarrying the flame' -the only comfort he draws from their situation. McCarthy clearly shows us the son struggling to accept his father's mentality and starting to form his own based on compassion and his own innate goodness. The fathers crisis of f aith develops throughout the novel. Towards the beginning of the novel, we see how he had mixed feelings over God, as he felt abandoned in this hell on earth. How does the never to be differ from what never was? Even with the son to place his hope in, the father's crisis of faith is enough to make him question if god ever existed. To cope with the world he lives in he adopts the mentality of ââ¬Ëshoot or be shot' and treats everything with suspicion and little compassion. However, we see exceptions to this rule where the sons influence is concerned like when they meet the old man Eli on the road and the father gives him food due to the sons pleading. But the real change occurs in the father towards the end of the novel when he knows he will die soon and accepts the son's mentality. Whatever form you spoke of, you were right. The father is beginning to understand the boys mind set. But immediately after this comes the death of the father and although showing the son truly alone, i t also represents the death of his mentality and his religion which acts as an external body of rules used as a moral code. This organized religion has broken down in this environment. However, the son demonstrates a different path based on an innate goodness inside us. God was meaningless to the boy, he came from a world he did not understand or belong to. The boy never needed the father for meaning ââ¬â His innate goodness is meaning in itself. This mentality that the son can now carry on lends to the possibility of a future in this world that would be based on the assumption of an innate goodness in all of us that must be found in order to remain human. McCarthy is discussing the value of faith ââ¬â something worth living for, a reason to try to survive in the harshest of Corm McCarthy discusses the relationship between father and son situations. In his novel The Road. The father choice to make the son his Warrant' to live shows the influence he has on him. ââ¬ËGlowing like a tabernacle. ââ¬Ë He literally sees his son as a odd like figure. However, McCarthy makes clear throughout the novel that the fathers choices he makes in an attempt to protect his son are, while understandable, far from admirable. The father constantly treats everything as a threat. The small boy they encountered was left behind because the father suspected a trap. He nearly killed the already half-dead man who stole their shopping trolley of supplies. The path offered by the son is the more morally correct and therefore human choice to make. It seems as if the author is counting on the existence of the innate goodness inside all of us.Although he discusses the worst of what we are capable of, he sets up the expectation that humanity will find the best of itself. It is clear that the sons influence over his father went as far as to start to break down the walls of his religious mentality but in order to see the true demise of his organized religion the father must die. As a 16-year-old living a pampered life, this novel is a bit of a slap in the face. McCarthy forces us to ask the hard questions. At your core, are you good? Does your compassion outweigh your selfishness and greed? I would love to say yes but I'm not sure that I can. Charles Lamb Declines an Invitation
In this letter, Charles Lamb declines an invitation Into Cumberland from the English Romantic Poet, William Wordsmith. Lamb uses multiple techniques to help him decline this Invite. For example, Lamb expresses to Wordsmith how much he loves London and the fact that he never wants to leave the attachments he had made there. He also explains that he is neither interested nor passionate to join Wordsmith and his sister on their Journey into Cumberland. Lamb also uses tone in his letter. Because readers can interpret tone differently, it is no stretch to say thatLamb demonstrates several tones in his letter. These tones can be discerned throughout the letter, providing a message that could be viewed In numerous ways. The tones he uses include irony and mocking himself. Although there are many people all over the world who wish for better things and arent fortunate like others, there are also many people that are extremely happy with their life and would not want it to be any other way. One of the few techniques and rhetorical strategies that Lamb used in his letter was expressing to Wordsmith that he loves London for many reasons. He loved It because of the loud noise and the hustling people. Lamb wants Wordsmith to understand that he doesnt want to leave London for a trip in peaceful Cumberland. Lamb proves to be in love with London and all its craziness and would not enjoy himself in a relaxing place like Cumberland. Lamb is used to crowded streets, sleepless nights and the big city of London. Charles Lamb informed Wordsmith of the many reasons why he was very satisfied with his life and the many local attachments that he had made to London. He explained to Wordsmith that he didnt want to leave all of that behind on his runner. Two of the most significant characteristics one should have are passion and interest. If one isnt passionate about something they shouldnt be involved. One does something because they feel Interested to do It and feel determined and happy about that decision. That Is an example of another rhetorical strategy and technique that Lamb used to make Wordsmith realize that he was not interested in joining him and his sister on the trip to Cumberland. Lamb explains to Wordsmith that he does not care for nature, and would prefer spending his time in the busy streets ofLondon. He had nothing inside of him telling him that he really wanted to accept the offer. Because Wordsmith assuming needed Lamb to be passionate about the Journey, It was a strong technique for Lamb to use. When declining the invitation into Cumberland. The tones used by Lamb are mocking humor and irony. Lamb mocks himself when explaining to Wordsmith the reasons why he loved London. All of the reasons would not sound appealing to anyone expect himself. He describes London as a dirty, loud and busy place, which would usually not attract most people. Most people would rather be in a relaxing and quiet place but Lamb preferred the busy lifestyle. This is using a mocking and humorous tone because he is insulting his choices as a person and realizes that it is bizarre to love such things. He also uses an ironic tone because he is stating the exact opposite to what Wordsmith is surely thinking. Wordsmith would assume that Lamb would love to Join him on such a Journey because it is what he loves to do. Wordsmith loves nature and exploring. However, Lamb expresses to him that he loves the exact opposite and would rather be in a place like London, than explore beautiful mountains and nature. In conclusion, Lamb used great techniques and tones to decline the invitation to Cumberland with Wordsmith. He expresses that he loves the London lifestyle and that he has no determination or interest in Joining in their Journey. He uses a humorous mocking tone and an ironic tone throughout the letter to help him explain to Wordsmith that he doesnt want to go to Cumberland. His use of tones and rhetorical techniques make Hornwort not get offended by Lambs response and also understand where he is coming from.

First Contact with America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
First Contact with America - Essay Example It is not hard to imagine that European influence was evident on all settlers and continued on for a substantial period of time. The settlers were mostly British and they brought with them their British lifestyle, culture, trends, and traditions. Europe at this time was in its prime as the cultural center of the World with poets, musicians, writers, artists and theater whereas the settlers lacked this substantially. The main reason for this was not the lack of talent but a preoccupation with settling into a new land and making it home. Another region that the colonists could not avoid was America itself with its native population of ââ¬Å"red Indiansâ⬠as they came to be known. The fact that these natives were called ââ¬Å"Red Indiansâ⬠shows the British Influence on the settlers who had trade ties with the Indian Sub-continent. The early settlers learned a lot from these natives who were well aware of their local land including sources of food, cultivation, weather trends and much more. The colonist had much to learn from these natives even though the natives lived a life of which by most standards of that time could be referred to as a savage living. Native people were also familiar with Europeans as the French had traded fur with the natives throughout the 16th century. The settlers gave these natives the deadly gift of smallpox. Around 1615, smallpox or yellow fever (for which the Native population had no immunity) swept the coast. Many of the people who lived between Penobscot Bay to the east side of Narragansett Bay died.

Total Quality Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Total Quality Management - Essay Example In quality improvement teams, employees from the same department, division, or team of the organisation brainstorm to identify a list of problems to resolve. The advantage of this approach is that the employees characteristically have the best view of their work environment and associated problems and can develop ideas to improve efficiency and effectiveness. The drawback to this is that the problems chosen by the group may or may not contribute to the Axact Inc. overall goals. Axact Inc. with a focused success paradigm can multiply the return on its investment for its quality efforts over an organisation without a clear vision. With the myriad of problems any given group can identify, it is important that resources be allocated for problem solving that can contribute positively to the successful implementation of Axact Inc. strategy. Based on such considerations, it is evident that the need for specific criteria and models to verify the quality fit between the Axact Inc. and the business atmosphere in that it operates, and to effectively and efficiently manages the relationships among the actors within the network. Such relationships, in fact, are characterised by many-to-many connections instead of more traditional one-to-one. For that reason, a deep revision of current managerial techniques is dramatically requested. Regardless of huge number of works on this subject, (Harland et al., 2001; Lamming et al., 2000), reliable criteria for the analysis and the evaluation of Axact Inc. networks, based on the relationships among economic actors interconnected through Internet, are not yet available. Accordingly, managers usually operate according to empirical methodologies that often do not assure optimal quality performances. In order to contribute towards the solution of such a problem, preliminarily examined facto rs that mostly affect the Axact Inc. quality performances. It may be assumed that effectiveness and efficiency of Axact Inc. depend on the coherence between the characteristics of the atmosphere in that the embedded actors operate and the way in that relationships among embedded actors are managed. The management of such relationships, consecutively, is based on the following three factors (Cucchiella et al., 2002): The structures adopted to organise the relationships among the actors of the network (Axact Inc. organisational structures). The criteria adopted to manage such relationships (managerial criteria); and The activities to be done for coordinating the relationships (critical activities). With respect to the Axact Inc. organisational structures, Tapscott et al. (2000) define five types of b-web adopted to manage relationships among embedded actors based on the level of product-service value integration (high vs. low) and control type: Agora, Aggregation, Value chain, Alliance, and Distributive network. According to Nkkentved (2000), the managerial criteria may be instead, defined on the basis of two variables, the market fragmentation and the product/process complexity. Consequently, six types of criteria may be identified: Auction house; Independent trading exchanges; Vendor trading

GEOLOGY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMNET - Essay Example Until recently, it was accepted that we live in the Holocene epoch which began at the end of the last ice age. However, the Dutch chemist Paul Crutzen coined the word Anthropocene epoch. The Anthopocene epoch can be considered to have begun sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. This is because, human impact upon the world has grown much more prominent since the last century and continues to do so with the human population being quadrupled in this period and the human biomass already being much larger than that of any species that ever existed on earth. The concept of a new epoch after the Holocene epoch was first introduced by an Italian geologist named Antonio Stoppani in 1870, but was rejected as unscientific. Since then however the human impact on earth has grown by immense standards and thus the Anthropocene epoch can be said to have begun after the late 19th century. I do support the concept of the Anthropocene epoch primarily because along with the increase in popula tion, the impact of technology on the earth cannot be overlooked.

Education management - Thesis Example This mobility is something special as it is confined to a single country. It has some similarities with international mobility because Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region administered under separate set of different from the mainland China. Administrative and education pattern in Hong Kong differs much from that obtaining in mainland China, and also with other parts of the world. Education in Hong Kong is the stepping stone for further education at the international levels also. The segment of education in Hong Kong is affected with student flow from mainland China and also from international quarters, with globalization and neo-liberalism. Discussion is also made in this article about the forces that have impacted and continue to impact the education system in Hong Kong. What are the characteristics that attract the students to pursue their studies in Hong Kong and encourage parents from mainland China to get their children admitted to schools in Hong Kong right from the ki ndergarten levels? Want are their special problems and how the administration is grappling to control the situation? The paper concludes by indicating the significance of management of education of students of mainland China and Hong Kong. Two diametrically opposed political philosophies are working with a purpose to hammer out a common educational policy but it is futile to expect that Hong Kong will give up the upper hand in the field of education. The authorities at mainland China will not mind it, because Hong Kong is an integral part of the Peopleââ¬â¢s Republic of China. Hong Kong has been a Special Administrative Regions (SAR)of the Peopleââ¬â¢s Republic of China (PRC) since their sovereign reversion to PRC from the United Kingdom within the structure of ââ¬Å"one country, two systemsâ⬠in 1997. What does Hobbes mean by sovereignty Is his understanding of this Essay
What does Hobbes mean by sovereignty Is his understanding of this concept still relevant today - Essay Example In addition, a modest relationship between subjects executing expected obedience and a sovereign who extracts obedience to none also exists. This vertical construction of sovereign and subjects, rendering to this theory, is similar to the pillar of a man. The structure establishes a vital component of any human society which owns a system of law as the support comprises a vital part of the man. Where this structure exists, we may legally speak of human society pegged with its sovereign. Therefore, as a single independent state, we may also voice its law. In situations where this structure is vague, we cannot lawfully apply those expressions. This is because the relation of the sovereign to the subjects constitutes part of the very connotation of those expressionsThomas Hobbes' philosophy of government Hobbes stated a clear personal sureness in his point as the 'author or inventor of a reliable political science'. Published in 1647 in De Cive, Hobbes made a maiden and cautious claim t o have exposed a way of 'rationalising investigation into political activities hence creating a 'new science'. The mechanical resemblance became for Hobbes both apposite and inevitable. Civic struggle was translating to disaggregation of the modern 17th century English state. As a result, it demonstrated to him that the endorsements which held it composed, were neither undying nor 'natural (Morris, 1999). Hobbes was mainly intent on the formation of an unbiased, notional science of government that would stress the importance of truth above the pleasures of rhetoric or the value of propaganda (Fukuda, 1997). He emphases his attention on rudimentary principles rather than altering institutions or systems of government. Leviathan can, consequently, be seen as a political person that can exhibit noble, republican, monarchical or autonomous features (Sim and Walker, 2003) Thomas Hobbes and his renunciation of the principle of right reason. Hobbes's first squabble in support of the principle of absolute sovereignty is fundamentally the dispute against right reason. This is described as the idea and the heart of Hobbes's ethical and political attitude (Zagorin, 2009). His doctrine of complete sovereignty is derived principally from the denial of this doctrine. Almost everything that we can learn in his concept of sovereignty can be established in his negation of this squabble. It is worth noting that this argument that leads to his deduction that it is crucial for the sovereign to be unconditional, and to possess actual enforcement or intimidating powers. Hobbes is predominantly concerned with the central problem of human life in the commonwealth. This is pegged with the way in which conflict ascends from those numerous, plans, schemes and desires, which cause the individuals action. He sets out to institute that, if each person were to be permitted the liberty to shadow his own conscience, then in the occurrence of an assortment of such principles, peace and synchronization in the commonwealth would be momentary. This is due to an all universal tendency to divergence, and the attendant danger of civil non-compliance (Fukuda, 1997). Problems created by men existing in a civil society do not only

Trends and issues in the development of information technology for Essay
Trends and issues in the development of information technology for EBusiness - Essay Example The Web services model allows any user access through the use of XML tags for information exchange using the other three standards: SOAP, UDDI, and WSDL. The distinguishing feature of Web services technology is that it allows provider and consumers to not be tied in to a particular service set and truly minimizing the impact of change to switch service providers. Thus information system built on Web services allows companies to seamlessly integrate provider's functionality into their enterprise software applications, such as Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Resource Planning and others. Use of the Internet for expanding business of the company is a reality, so those who ignore the high technologies will lose the race for competitive advantage. On the other hand, those who have embraced the power of e-commerce solutions are innovators. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics, 83% of businesses used computers, 71% of businesses use Internet access, and 23% of businesses had web sites in June 2003. Proportion of businesses placing or receiving orders via the Internet or web was 25% in purchasing and 6% in selling in 2001-2002 and 28% in purchasing and 13% in selling in 2002-2003. Business income attributable to receiving orders via the Internet or web was 5% or more for 42% of companies in 2002-2003. At that time main business perceptions of the benefits for the business of receiving orders via the Internet or web were increased number of customers (28%) and faster business processes (53%). Main business perceptions of placing orders via the Internet or web were time saving (86%) and ability to track orders (20%). (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006, para.11-18) An important issue for development of information technologies for application in e-commerce is Internet penetration. UNCTAD Report (2006, p.4) finds that number of Internet users continues to grow in all regions, in particular in Africa, whereas the market is the most mature in the United States. Despite high growth in many developing countries, Internet penetration rates are still very low. For example, China, the second largest Internet market in the world after the United States, has a penetration rate of only 6.3 per 100 inhabitants. While the number of computers is increasing substantially in developing countries, particularly in some of the emerging markets, computer penetration remains very low. The Report reveals that enterprises' Internet use is high (up to 90%) in developed countries and among medium-sized and large enterprises in developing cou

Effects of Colonial America Essay Example for Free
Effects of Colonial America Essay Despite the fact the regions of New England and the Chesapeake Bay were settled by people of English origin, the two areas evolved into two different societies. The changes in the formation of colonial America occurred because of the motivations for settlement, economic opportunities in the area, and the structure of towns and cities differed among the settlers. The New England coloniesââ¬â¢ were established from the motivation of religious freedom and to cleanse the English church, while the Chesapeake region was settled to make a profit in the mother country, England. The New England colonies began with the settlement of the pilgrims likewise known as the Puritans. The Puritans first emerged in England, to escape religious persecution and to cleanse themselves of the corrupt English church the Puritans fled to the New England region The Puritans feared what the future of England held in store, so the majority of them immigrated with their families to New England all around the same time, which is known today as the great migration. This led the New England colonies to be primarily family based. On the other hand, the Chesapeake Bay coloniesââ¬â¢ were founded quite differently. The Chesapeake settlersââ¬â¢ motivation in settlement was result of the poor economic conditions in England. Immigrants hoped for a better life and better economic standing in the new world. The majority of these immigrants were single men who came over as indentured servants, and served for five to seven years before being released as a free man. This in turn lead the Chesapeake region to be entirely male dominate. In addition to indentured servants, wealthy men also immigrated to the new world in hopes to find gold, but instead found an item worth far greater, tobacco. This discovery of tobacco in the fertile soils of the Chesapeake caused the complete dividing point in the foundation of the Chesapeake and the New English opportunities in the area. Because of the perfect conditions the area of the Chesapeake posed, tobacco became the largest profit for the mother county, England. Tobacco was known as the gold of Virginia, which was the first Chesapeake colony. England, having realized the importance of tobacco fought for control over these colonies and succeeded, making the Chesapeake apart of royal colonies of the New World. On the very contrast were the New England colonies that didnââ¬â¢t have the right condition to profit from the growing of tobacco, so instead wealthy merchants traded with the Indians to obtain furs and other needed items. This resulted in New England not to become targeted as a resource by Englandââ¬â¢s crown. Thus New England did not become part of the royal colonies such as the Chesapeake did. This in turn made the New England colonies more suitable for families to settle and establish homes and churches. With the immigration of families into the New England society, the establishment of towns and cities resulted in a stark contrast to the Chesapeake Bay colonies. Returning to the Puritan families, the settlement of groups of families caused towns and cities to be built, with the church creating religious principals. The living conditions made it ideal for families to reside and because of this birth rate and survival were higher in New England. The establishment of towns created a more stable foundation for the New England colonies. Never the less, the lack of families in the Chesapeake region caused a deficiency of towns to be built. This in return caused little social unity and no stable family life. Men outnumbered women in the region and the high death rate in this area caused large numbers of single men, widows, and orphans. Without the establishment of towns, large tobacco plantations became the soul of the Chesapeake. This resulted in very distinct societies of the Chesapeake and New England. All things considered, the contrast of the Chesapeake and New England societies is marked by motivation for settlement, thus shown in the types of immigrantsââ¬â¢ beliefs. In addition, the area also gave a startling impact to how the land was settled, which resulted in the making of towns verses the running of large plantations. Even though the setters all came from the same place, these slight differences made a huge impact in the Chesapeake and New England colonies.

The Sports Goods Industry Of India Marketing Essay
The Sports Goods Industry Of India Marketing Essay The roots of Sports Goods Industry in India are in Sialkot, Pakistan. In 1947, when the partition of the country took place, many of the skilled Hindu craftsmen migrated to Indian part of Punjab and settled in Jalandhar where one of the major sports cluster is now located. Later on some of the migrants shifted to Meerut. The sports Goods Industry of India is spread over the length and breadth of the country. It is located in Jalandhar, Meerut, Delhi, Gurgaon, Agra, Mumbai, Moradabad and Kolkata. The industry is concentrated largely in Meerut and Jalandhar. Punjab and Meerut have emerged as the leading centers for sports goods manufacture and the only industry which appears to offer some prospects is sports goods industry of Punjab, Meerut is yet to be powerful. (Chander Mohan, 2002). Both Meerut and Jalandhar together claim more than 80% of the domestic market. A major share of all Indias output is accounted for by these two centers (Pandit, 1985, p.116) The sports goods industry is mainly concentrated in the cottage and small scale sector. The industry is highly labour intensive, provides employment to weaker sections of the society. Sports Goods Industry is highly labour intensive industry consists miniature workshops with the exception of medium and large scale units. (Sharma, 1991, p.10). The industry has shown a tremendous growth over the last ten decades. The exports of sports goods industry can be seen as: The Indian sports goods export has shown an increasing trend. It manufactures approximately 318 items (Manzoor Ahmad, p. 4). Today many of the Indian manufacturers are producing the products under their own brand name. They are also producing for other international sports brands. The major item that are exported are Inflatable balls, Hammocks, Cricket Bats, Boxing Equipments and Protective Equipments. The item wise export of sports goods for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 is as follows: The largest component of export is Inflatable balls which accounts for 29% of total exports followed by Hammocks which accounts for 9% and cricket bats accounting for 8%. The total domestic market for various sports goods is estimated to be around Rs. 170 crores of which cricket related items account for 70% of the market share. (Exim Bank, 1998). The production structure of the industry consists of four levels: Big units which mainly cover export market apart from supplying goods to domestic market. Small units which manufactures only for domestic market or as per the orders of exporters. Sub contractors who are catering to the demand of these big and small units and producing exclusively as per the orders received. Household workers who are producing goods at home. Some of them obtain raw material directly from the factories while some of them produce as pr the orders of subcontractors. These workers are paid in piece rate basis. 4.2 SPORTS GOODS CLUSTER OF JALANDHAR Jalandhar is an important city of Punjab located in the doaba region. It is located between two rivers i.e. Satluj and Beas. It is also situated between two important cities of Punjab i.e. Ludhiana (70 kms) and Amritsar (60 kms). Jalandhar is also a city of location of two important clusters of handtools and the leather cluster. Apart from these two clusters, Sports Goods Cluster is also located at Jalandhar. Today more than 50% of Indias export of sports goods is from Jalandhar alone (As per the records of SGEPC, Delhi). The emergence of sports goods cluster of Jalandhar can be divided into two parts:- Sports Goods Cluster before Independence Sports Goods Cluster after Independence 4.2.1 Sports Goods Cluster before Independence The origin of sports goods cluster of Jalandhar can be traced back to Sialkot (now in Pakistan). Prior to partition of the country, Sialkot was the sports goods production centre. Sialkot is located in foothills of Himalayas. The wood required for manufacturing of sports items was available in large quantity. The credit for introducing cricket in India goes to British army. As the number of British people increases, the demand for sports equipments also increases. After sometime, middle class families of India also get increased in playing the games. But the increased demand of sports equipments could not be easily fulfilled by those items which are imported from England. Further, their prices were also high and an average Indian cannot afford it as the cost of transportation was very high. The first item to be manufactured was a tennis racquet by the firm Uberai Ltd. in 1888. This firm was founder of sports industry in India (Sharma, 1990, p.16). According to a myth, sports goods in dustry starts in Sialkot, when a british man broke his tennis racquet. Due to unavailability of immediate replacement, a local person Mr. Ganda Singh Uberai, a clerk in army was asked to get it repair. Mr, Ganda called a local artisan to repair racquet. The man did a perfect job and sports goods industry comes into existence. There was manufacturing of only racquet on small scale till 1895. Then with the passage of time, with the spread of education in India, various European games like cricket, badminton and squash gained popularity in Indian educational institutions and encouraged the production of sports goods related to these games (Sharma, 1990, p.16).The product range further expanded to include cricket and hockey balls, footballs, polo sticks etc. By that time, many workers get training in Uberio Ltd. and start setting up their own units. By the time of partition, Sialkot has earned a reputed name as manufacturer of sports goods. In 1946-47, sports goods worth Rs. 3 crore wer e exported from this centre and industry was estimated to employ 40000 to 45000 workers directly and indirectly (Pandit, 1985, p116) 4.2.2 Sports Goods Cluster after Independence In 1947, due to partition of the country, Sialkot becomes a part of Pakistan. The entrepreneurs belonging to one community decides to shift from Sialkot. The workers belonging to that community also migrated along with the entrepreneurs. As per the resettlement plan of Government of India, initially these migrants settled in Batala in Punjab, which was near to Sialkot and close to hills where the wood required for manufacturing sports items could be grown. But as per resettlement plan of Government of India, these people shift from Batala to Jalandhar. Jalandhar was found to be suitable place for manufacturing sports items due to its location near the foothills of Himalayas which assured regular supply of wood and further the presence of leather cluster assured regular supply of leather. At Jalandhar, both of the raw material required were easily available. Some of the migrants shifted to Merutt, where also both wood and leather were available. The migrants located at Jalandhar start ed manufacturing of sports items and flourished as a cluster consisting of a number of firms working together. Jalandhar industry is located traditionally in two localities, Basti Nau and Basti Sheikh. With the growth of industry, many firms start up their units in the adjoining areas of Basti Danishmandan, Nakodar road etc. The workers working in the industry are settled in Bhargav camp, Gandhi camp and Basti Danishmandan. Now entrepreneurs have started setting up modern units in Surgical and Sports Goods Complex, industrial area, located on the highway to the city. However the network of traditional business process is so strong that even these firms have their offices in Basti Nau and Basti Sheikh- the traditional location. 4.3 MAJOR PRODUCTS OF THE CLUSTER Sports goods is a wider term and any item which is used for sporting activities is also included in this term. A number of products are covered under this category. The various sports goods can be classified into following sectors: A. Inflatable Balls 1. Footballs 2. Soft leather goods 3. Bladders 4. Water Polo balls 5. Base balls 6. Volley Balls 7. Tennis balls 8. Rugby balls 9. Hand balls 10. Punch balls 11. Golf and Billiard balls 12. Net balls B. Sports Equipment 1. Cricket equipment 2. The Free Will of Shakespeares Macbeth :: GCSE English Literature Coursework
Free Will of Macbethà à à Shakespeare à ââ¬Å"Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.â⬠(Witches, IV, I, 94) Everyone has control over something. Whether it be themselves, someone else, or a possession, they have control. Throughout the play Macbeth, written by Shakespeare, Macbeth is controlled by three witches and also his wife. Macbeth has a free will to choose to do what he wants but he frequently chooses to do what others want or predict of him. In Act I, Scene iii, Macbeth canââ¬â¢t withhold himself from knowing more of what the witches have to predict. He says to them, ââ¬Å"Stay, you imperfect speakers. Tell me more.â⬠(73) This is where the witches begin to gain control over Macbeth, we know this because he doesnââ¬â¢t want them to leave and wants to know more about what he will become. When Macbeth finds out what the witches have predicted of him is coming true, he becomes stunned. He then begins to think of how he will be king, and all the prophecies will be won. Macbeth makes an aside saying, ââ¬Å" Two truths are told as happy prologues to the swelling act of the im perial theme.â⬠(I, iii, 140) Here Macbeth is falling into the trap of the witches by realizing that he will be able to conquer the quest of becoming king. It seems like Macbeth is someone who always gets what he wants, this greed that he has causes a problem. He wants to become king, but others stand in his way, such as Banquo, Fleance, and Macduff. He says in Act I, Scene iv, to Banquo, ââ¬Å"If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir.â⬠(157) He knows that he has done nothing to become Thane of Glamis, so he doesnââ¬â¢t have to do anything to become king. At this point it seems that Macbeth feels it is destiny for him to be king but it soon changes to his free will. Like stated before, Macbeth thought he had done nothing to become Thane of Glamis but, he had. Macbeth had chopped the king of Norwayââ¬â¢s head off during battle. This shows that in order for Macbeth to have gained Thane of Glamis he must kill. When he realizes this, he com es to find out that he will have to get rid of those in his way by killing them to become king. Religion In American Life :: essays research papers
Religion In American Life Religion used to be a very important component in an American's life. Protestantism was as American as Mom and apple pie. Families would don their "Sunday best" and go to church early on Sunday mornings. However, this situation has changed quite a bit. After reviewing the 1994 statistics I gathered from the Micase system and comparing them to the statistics received in class, I discovered a trend away from traditional religious beliefs and practices, and one toward atheism or alternative religious beliefs. After a resurgence in the 1970's and early 1980's, the Roman Catholic church began experiencing a slow, yet steady, decline in membership. As membership in the more orthodox Roman Catholic church decreased, membership in Protestant churches increased. In recent years, the Catholic Church has become politically active and more vociferous concerning its views on moral issues such as war, abortion, and euthanasia. It is my feeling that many Catholics are searching for sects that will allow them to retain their faith in Christ without a central body (i.e., the Vatican) speaking on behalf of them on issues that they are capable of rationalizing for themselves. Among Catholics and Protestants, there is a trend toward less rigid attendance of religious services. If we examine the figures from Stark and Glock's 1968 survey, 54% of Americans surveyed at the time attended church more often than once a month. This figure shrank to 40.7% in the 1994 survey. Though the Catholic church insists on weekly attendance of church, weekly attendance dropped from 52% in 1978 to 49% in 1986. Then, attendance plummeted, with only 28.3% of Catholics surveyed in 1994 claiming to have attended church in the last seven days. Even among those who remain with the traditional Christian sects, attendance is diminishing. Christianity used to be an integral part of most family and community customs and traditions in America. It seems that as Americans' lives become more complex, less time is available for formal religious commitments. Also, one may theorize that the exponential growth of technology and education has rendered traditional religious teachings, such as creationism, obsolete and people are leaving the Christian churches because their teachings do not agree with their personal beliefs. However, not everyone is leaving the Catholic church for Protestant denominations. In the last thirty years, the number of people claiming to have no religious affiliation have increased almost five-fold, with 2% of the people surveyed claiming no affiliation in 1967, and 9.2% claiming the same in 1994. Since the early 1980's, there has also been an increase in the number of people claiming "other" religious beliefs. French democracy 1970- future :: essays research papers
A comparative chronology of democracy/election and how it has and will influence politics in France between the time period of 1970-2020. à à à à à In 1958, the highly centralized Fifth Republic was created, which lasts to the present day. Its constitution is characterized by the strong executive powers vested in the presidency. This constitution was approved by popular vote, and direct elections every seven years elect a President. The President presides over a cabinet of members headed by a Prime Minister of his or her choosing. The legislative body is divided into two houses, the National Assembly and the senate, whose members are elected for nine-year terms. The National Assembly's members are directly elected for five-year terms. The Senate members are indirectly elected by an electoral college to serve nine-year terms. The French judicial system assesses the constitutionality of legislation that is referred to review by the Parliament, Prime Minister or President. The Fifth Republic was almost overthrown in 1968 by a radical alliance of students and industrial workers. In reaction, conservative presidents and center-right majorities in the National Assembly governed France throughout the 1970s. In 1981, a Socialist Francois Mitterland won the presidential election, the first time the Socialist partyââ¬â¢s candidate had been victorious. In May 1988, he was reelected for a second term. Jacques Chirac, who had been both mayor of Paris and Prime Minister, had succeeded Mitterland as president in May of 1995 after a narrow victory over the Socialist challenger Lionel Jospin. In the legislature, Chirac had the benefit of a conservative majority. This came about after a victory for the right in the legislative elections in March 1993: unusually, the two right-wing parties, the Gaullist Rally for the Republic Party (RPR) and the more centrist Union Democratique Francaise (UDF)-normally fierce rivals, agreed to present joint candidates. Edouard Balladur of the RPR, a sometime Minister of Finance, became Prime Minister. In 1995, Balladur was replaced by Alain Juppe, whose rigorous pursuit of an economic austerity program undermined the support for the government and opened the way for revival of the left. à à à à à Presently, France has a mixed presidential and parliamentary government that unites directly and popularly elected President, as Head of State, with a cabinet dependent on parliamentary confidence. As in other presidential governments, the presidentââ¬â¢s term is fixed, but he or she may be reelected an unlimited number of times. The French Constitution of 1958 reduced the power of the Parliament and conferred onto the President the right to dissolve the National Assembly and to appoint the head of French government, the Prime Minister, as well as the Council of Ministers. Simon Birch
Simon Birch Simon Birch an underdeveloped child has become best friends with a kid named Joe. Simon was sometimes picked on by the other kids because of his condition, but he ignored them and kept to himself. Simon has strong faith in God and wasnââ¬â¢t afraid to show it, if he didnââ¬â¢t think something was right about the church or about someoneââ¬â¢s actions towards the Bible, he wasnââ¬â¢t afraid to tell you. Simon kept telling people that he was made the way he was because God has a plan for him and that he would become a hero, but no one believed him.Simonââ¬â¢s best friend Joe had some faith in God but definitely not as much as Simon did. They would go to church but it didnââ¬â¢t look like they were to into it. The two had been friends for a long time and Simon had inspired Joe in his faith and in many other things as well. Simon later found out that God did make him the size he is for a reason, and he was a hero. He had saved all the kids from the bus that h ad crashed into the lake. Many people have doubted Simon and his abilities and he has proved them wrong every time. After Simon had saved the kids from the bus he had unfortunately passed away but he will never be forgotten. Faith is not seeing but believing and Simon had all the faith that a little kid could and now thanks to Simon Joe has the same faith in God that his best friend Simon did.Joe is not the only person that Simon has inspired and developed faith in. Simon has greatly developed faith in me and my peers by showing us the true values of life and no matter what people say, think, or do, God has made you the way you are for a reason and in one what or another everyone will become a hero. In the movie Simon clearly demonstrates his knowledge of the bible and inspires hope in many other kids that are small like him who do not have very much self confidence. Simon shows how he can take charge and be a leader.Simon Birch has opened my eyes and taught me that judging people is wrong and that looks can be deceiving. Simon has greatly enriched my opinion on God and I know that he had made a huge impact on other kids and adults across the world. Simon Birch will live in the lives of many for ever and ever, this little boy was a hero and will forever rest knowing that he had completed Gods plan and fulfilling the scripture. Simon Birch 1. A Difficult Decision
Decision making is one of the hardest things a human being can do for themselves. The decisions people make, they do to either better themselves or worsen themselves. Decision making could be: what college someoneââ¬â¢s going to or making a big change in their lives like moving. Others would make a bad decision, whether itââ¬â¢s ignoring good advice or going as far as doing drugs. Some people would make decisions because of the situation there in and is an impulse decision, but sometimes it turns out good.Decision MakingFor four and a half years, I thought my mother was actually starting to change, but, in reality I misled myself into believing something that wasnââ¬â¢t true. I was a responsible student, worked and thought everything was going well and where I wanted it to be. The last few months that I lived with my mother and step-father, everything went spiraling into complete and total chaos. The last week, was the worst and best thing that has ever happened for me, and also the most difficult decision of my life. The start of everythingIn July of 2013, my life started to spiral out of control, I just graduated high school and was looking for work consistently. My mother insisted that I pay rent, every week until I could find my own place to live; at first I didnââ¬â¢t mind that, I just needed to find a job and fast. I luckily found a job a month later, I was doing very well there and then I got second job. I wasnââ¬â¢t making that much money and my mom kept insisting that the rent Iââ¬â¢m supposed to pay, is more than the last time.I barely made the amount she wanted me to pay a week, so I tried to find other things I could possibly do to make more money; I was out of luck. My mom and I started to argue a lot over the littlest things. I was trying to get myself out of that house as soon as possible, the living conditions were very bad no matter what I wouldà try to do, no food, filthy house. I was never home to do any of the cleaning be cause I was always at work or on my spare time see the people I really care about; but, it started to get worse.Getting worseAs the months started to drag on bye, my living situation became increasingly worse. I had found out that my mother and her husband were doing drugs. I really didnââ¬â¢t appreciate the way they used me and thought I was stupid enough to believe they werenââ¬â¢t doing anything. They started accusing me of stealing things, and doing things that I never even thought about doing. One day my mother called the police on me and she had told the police officer that I had attacked her. This was the most hurtful thing imaginable, my own mother, calling the police on me.What happened was, I wanted the money I had lent to her back ($50), I needed the money for some food, she kept resisting giving me my money back; I saw the money laying on the counter, so I went and got it and she, repeatedly kicked me in the stomach and bit me. Never once, would I ever put a hand o n my mother. Iââ¬â¢m really glad I had people in my life that would take care of me whenever I needed a helping hand. The evictionThe last week that I saw my mother was the day I received an eviction notice from her, right before Christmas. I was very hurt and I had no idea what to do, Iââ¬â¢ve never been in this situation before; I was scared. She said that I didnââ¬â¢t do anything around the house to help, so I had to go. I Know why she evicted me and I hope that someday that she will get the help that she needs. A couple of days after I had received the eviction notice, I found a place to live. It was not an easy move, but it was the best choice I have ever made. On December 7, 2013 I said my final goodbyes to my mother and have not seen or mumbled a single word to her, since that day.Where I wentPeople, who Iââ¬â¢m not even related to, treated me just like their family. I call her my aunt Tonya; she has been sheltering me since that day. She offered me a place to stay , and I took the offer. The difficult decision was that I had to move an hour and a half away, from my family and friends. They all understood, and want me to succeed in life, and show people I will make something of myself and prove the people that told me I couldnââ¬â¢t wrong. Now,à Iââ¬â¢m focusing better on school, and plan to succeed.

Netflix Analysis
The following analysis is about Netflix and Blockbuster. Two successful companies with similar target market but at the same time with very different strategies which can make the difference of success in the future or contrary go down. First of all we need to clarify what is the specific situation of each one. Blockbuster is a rental home video company that has been leading the market during many years, since the VHS cassette till the appearance of the DVD and the expansion of the internet. They have had a well-designed strategy which let them growth significantly being the leaders in the market, having in 2006 more than 5000 locations within the US. They basically offered a huge number of in-store movie rental. As it is said in the text their financial success is based on the maximization of the days that a movie is rented. Also it is important to mention that a big part of their revenues came from the ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢late feesââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (10% of the total revenues in 2004). But as the times were changing, the customerââ¬â¢s needs were changing too and Blockbuster was in the need to adapt his business to the market. Netflix, being so visionary ten years ago, was launched as a personalized DVD movie rental using USPS to deliver DVDs to its subscribers and using a pricing model similar to the one used by video stores. The following analysis focuses on how those two companies that cover the same needs, they have totally different strategies and by analyzing both strategies we will see how a good strategy and a good knowledge of the market can make the difference and take a company to the success. Basing on the data and information in the case, Blockbuster would be ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢shortââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ and Netflix would be ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢longââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. Blockbuster has an old-fashioned strategy, they focused all their efforts in differentiate from Netflix by integrating online and traditional in-shop services and by copying Netflixââ¬â¢s strategy of no late fees. Despite their attempts they had significant operation losses and they just grew 5% (they expected a bigger growth by suppressing late fees). Contrary, Netflix would be ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢longââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ because from the beginning they were visionary, and they were offering what customers needed while the times were changing. Because of that their net income has been growing significantly. As inferred in Exhibit 1 in the case, net income multiplied in just two years (in 2004 was 21595$ and in 2006 the net income was 49082$). It is important to take into account what jobs did Netflix and Blockbuster for consumers. Blockbuster was the leader in the market by offering consumers in shop movie rent. They perfectly covered the need of watching the latest movies at home. They were very successful and so they expanded by opening new locations with the objective that at least 70% of the population have a Blockbuster very close. Netflix though, offered movies but unlike Blockbuster, they deliver the rented movies to the customerââ¬â¢s houses. They changed the concept of traditional movie renter. Netflix was created as a new concept, but covering the same need that Blockbuster was covering. Over time, Netflix grew more and more thanks to this competitive advantage that made the difference from Blockbuster. About their profit models, Netflix reached profitability by investing capital in opening more distribution centers producing more subscriptions thanks to the improved delivery service. As showed on Exhibit 2 in the case, the increase on the number of subscribers was very significant with 107 in 1999 to 6316 subscribers in 2006. Netflix based its strategy in the concepts of convenience and selection and they showed it by introducing the prepaid subscription based model where customers had to pay a monthly fee instead of the old per rental charge model. With this strategy they were be able to have better customer retention. On the other hand, Blockbuster was primarily focused on making the company profitable by expanding geographically, opening new locations so that they can increase the market share. Blockbuster focused the strategy on the concept of ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢movie nightââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢, it means that their market is a specific niche in which customers make an impulsive decision and rent a movie when they get in the shop. Thatââ¬â¢s why they only have high-demand movies (unlike Netflix that apart from high demand movies, they also have old or independent movies). The Netflix success is due to a series of different steps that the company has had to face from the beginning till nowadays. The changes in the customersââ¬â¢ needs and in the society led Netflix to a constantly changing strategies. They launched the platform in 1997 like an alternative way to the traditional movie renters, to provide home movies services better satisfying customerââ¬â¢s needs. They took advantage of the latest hit in the new technologies, the DVD. And they acted like early-adopters of the DVD focusing their efforts in attracting owners of this new device. They were being successful, but they started losing customers so they were in the need to make some changes. And they did. Netflix totally changed the pricing strategy from the traditional pay-per-rent to the subscription model which allowed customers unlimited movies a month. They came up with the recommendation system as they needed to differentiate from the traditional video rental stores offering something that they didnââ¬â¢t offer. To increase the quality and number of offered movies, they created business relationships with the major studios so that they reach customerââ¬â¢s needs. As a consequence of this growth, they increase the distribution channel with USPS. But apart from that, Netflix was having a huge problem. They were constantly losing customers. To solve these problems they thought different: attract the old customers that have canceled their subscriptions. To reach this goal, they changed the unsubscribing policy and instead of trying to retain them, they made the cancellation process as easy as the subscription one. Probably many of the customers that left before will come back to Netflix when the platform will earn more awareness or when just decided that they want to reopen their accounts. So if all those processes were easy for them, the impression of the brand on the customerââ¬â¢s mind will be positive. At this point Netflix was doing well, the numbers of subscription were increasing and their net income was increasing too. What would be next? The new technologies market is a constantly growing and changing market. Something that is being a hit now, in one year could be completely forgotten. With the expansion of the internet many in-shop services will be affected. Services that can be offered via internet will replace the traditional commerce. And this will be the case in the video rental. The traditional video rental services whether in-shop or delivery will tend to disappear because of the following reasons or assumptions: -Internet is growing more and more. Many improvements are being made to improve the quality. -The number of people who have internet at home is also increasing. -Customers are adapting to the new era and they are adapting to new technologies and regulations. So basing on that, as Netflix already did years ago, they should be innovative again and take the risk to change in order to keep profitability for the company. They canââ¬â¢t avoid the new trends, if they donââ¬â¢t follow the changes and they donââ¬â¢t adapt to them, they will disappear because customers will change to those brands that cover their actual needs. Netflix was offering what customerââ¬â¢s needed, but this is changing with the appearance of VOD, and so by covering the same need, they should adapt to the times by changing their strategy.

Parallel Situations Drawn Between King Lear and Gloucester
In what ways does Shakespeare draw parallel situations between King Lear and Earl of Gloucester, and how are the characters similar in the play (specifically Act 1)? While examining Lear and Gloucester, there are obvious similarities, such as that they are both of an older generation with evident power and authority. Both have children wishing to overthrow them through mendacity and false assurance. These two characters relate in a much more symbolic way that reveals insight into their foolishness and naà ¯ve sense of entitlement.Lear and Gloucester are symbolically blind to the fact that their children wish to acquire their power for selfish purposes. Edmund, Gloucesterââ¬â¢s son without a mother, falsifies his commitment to his half-brother, Edward, when he says ââ¬Å"I hope for my brotherââ¬â¢s justification, he wrote this but as an essay of my taste of my virtue,â⬠(Act 1 Scene 2) and Goneril, Learââ¬â¢s daughter, has him believe she genuinely loves him when she s ays ââ¬Å"Sir, I love you more than word can wield the matter,â⬠(Act 1 Scene 1).These instances lead to Lear and Gloucesterââ¬â¢s imprudent decisions to act on matters that deserve more substantial evidence. ââ¬Å"Gloucester reacts exactly like Lear, displacing his favor onto an unworthy recipientâ⬠(Storozynsky). Neither can see their children for who they truly are, which make it seems as if they the necessities to make rational decisions, hence being ââ¬Å"blindâ⬠. When considering the underlying characteristics of Lear and Gloucester, the audience can see two men, who are delusional with power, insecure and illogical. Their uncertainties stem from their children, who they love, but are quick to turn against.Lear turns against Cordelia because she refuses to discuss her love for him and Gloucester, for potentially having a preexisting fear that his children wanted him gone so they could have his power, believes that Edward wants him dead. ââ¬Å"The old men inhabit worlds created by the mind and emotions, but which share some of the features of their actual surroundings: isolation, heights and depths, enclosures and open, empty places,â⬠(Storozynsky). This author compares them to empty places and isolation, which is symbolic of their personality.Neither seems to be relatable to the audience, due to them not having any admirableà traits. Both seem to be shallow characters that lack the confidence that a man of power should carry with him. Lear and Gloucester both use the word ââ¬Å"nothingâ⬠frequently in the play and this has a symbolic attachment to it. We see Lear use the phrase ââ¬Å"nothing will come of nothingâ⬠(Act 1 Scene 1) while addressing his dissatisfaction with Cordelia. This provides insight into his shallowness because the audience is able to see that Lear expects to be verbally showered with praise. The irony is that Goneril and Reganââ¬â¢s flatteringââ¬â¢s lack authenticity and are the true st atements that mean ââ¬Å"nothing.Gloucesterââ¬â¢s use of the word comes during his conversation with Edmund. He notices Edmund hiding a letter and says, ââ¬Å"The quality of nothing hath not need to hide itself. â⬠(Act 1 scene 2) Gloucester, like Lear, finds himself gullible to false pretenses. This nothingness they speak of is something that they are displacing onto other people, when in fact, they should be self-assessing themselves for. Their ignorance and assumptive attitudes reflects the reason as to why their personalities are hollow and self-fulfilling. Through Act 1, the audience gets insight into the dramatic irony that is evident in both parallel situations. However, there are four more Acts to King Lear. The newer generations of greedy rulers (Goneril, Regan and Edmund) are expecting to cast out the older generation Lear and Gloucester. Lear, while talking to the fool, realizes that he may have made a mistake by handing down his power to his daughters. He is wor ried about his mental health when he says, ââ¬Å"O, let me not be mad, not mad sweet heaven! â⬠This is a foreshadowing of events to come in the book. Due to the parallel situations that Gloucester and Lear are in, both will continue to spiral down a path of chaos and ignorance. For Hotel Hilton, Optimus Ireland's Best award in December 2006 will go a long way towards encouraging it to perform still better. Innovation, excellence and value addition go hand in hand in today's competitive environment. Customers and the target segments are crucial stakeholders for hotel Hilton. Different types of value addition strategies are adopted by businesses to grow. These could involve trying out different types of market-product combinations, carrying out the business according to certain sets of principles, segmenting the market in their own way, or relying on the feedback of customers for shaping the final service. All this is possible only with the coordination and management of employees of the hotel, service processes, technology and other resources in order to produce better services for the customer. The value that has been added to the product has to be seen in relation to the customer's needs and expectations. In general, for an organisation there are both external and internal customers. The external customers are those who use the services of the hotel while the internal customers are the employees and other internal stakeholders. Once the service is delivered to the intended

Human Resources Diagnosis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Human Resources Diagnosis - Essay Example Richland Community College, like other complex systems, takes in resources and operate on them to produce some kind of output. They therefore depend on a continuing flow of resources for their existence and thus find themselves in an endless competition with other organizations that need the same resources. The main practices introduced by the College and its leader, Bill, are change management and motivation, positive climate (achieved by equal treatment of all employees) and self-evaluation. Richland Community College is a non-profit organization thus it has to compete more effectively in order to get a larger portion of available resources, which means that those that compete less effectively get fewer resources. Organizations act much like other systems that have intelligence. They have goals and long-term strategies for achieving them. By the same token, they also have strategies for how they are going to compete with other organizations to obtain the resources they need. The mi dlevel sets the conditions, procedures, and standards for the production level and allocates resources so as to promote production efficiency and effectiveness. And it, as is true for the operations layer, may also have several levels of "real" management.

CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW IN HEALTH CARE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 8
CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW IN HEALTH CARE - Essay Example The stakeholders own the corporation. They do not participate in the daily company operations, although they influence corporate major decisions. They also vote for and remove the BOD members from office. Finally, the stakeholders also take part in constituting and amending company by laws, Articles of Incorporation. They also handle mergers and any sales and dissolutions. Corporate authority is categorized into express and implied. According to Pozgar, ââ¬Å"Express corporate authority is the power specifically delegated by statute. A health care corporation derives authority to act with from the laws of the state in which it is incorporated. The articles of incorporation set forth the purpose(s) of the corporationââ¬â¢s existence and the powers the corporation is authorized to exercise in order to carry out its purposes. Implied corporate authority is the right to perform any and all acts necessary to exercise a corporationââ¬â¢s expressly conferred authority and to accomplish the purpose(s) for which it is created.â⬠How do corporations come into play in the delivery of healthcare services? Health care organisations are incorporated as non profit corporations, thus they are exempted from the taxation bracket and are open to receive donorââ¬â¢s contributions. In the delivery of health care services, corporations ensure that they follow the stated mandate and incorporation by laws. Else, the governing body would be held accountable for not performing procedures in its written scope, which is an ultra vires act. An example of this would be employing someone who is not conversant with the health care practice. How do corporate ethics impact healthcare? They build and restore trust in the system. People are trusting health care facilities in how they operate, treat patients, how they inform their patients on their rights and responsibilities and the procedures to follow in the event of improper conduct. Corporate ethics has also
